Hospital
Written by subversive-imaginati

In just under 3 hours I'm due to be admitted for my operation. I'm not looking forward to it.
Wish me luck. :)
Edit: I'm back, fairly healthy and just in a little bit of pain. They kept me in extra time because I started fitting and wouldn't stop.
Edit2: You put your left leg in, you put your left leg out, in, out, in, out and shake it all about. Thanks for the wellwishes, I was rushed back into hospital on the Saturday and they turfed me out yesterday. As it stands they think I have Vaso Vagal syndome which means I can't stand, sit, walk or anything right now. When I'll be back on my feet? I don't know. The hospital just sent me home to cope on my own, apparently constantly blacking out isn't enough of a reason to be in the hospital. My doctor is being less than helpful so I don't really have much information right now, I'll try to update when I know more.
Edit: mistyped the name of the illness.
Edit: Yet another update. Turns out since the doctor didn't receive the information on what's wrong from the hospital, he has to follow steps and the next is treating me for inner ear issues, except that the drugs he sent me for that didn't play tickety boo with my heart, these drugs say that all serious issues should be seen by a doctor immediately and I'd say massive palpitations and a drop in blood pressure followed by repeatedly blacking out even while on the floor talking to someone are serious.
The ambulance crew were concerned enough to haul me into hospital, then I got bounced between departments as both sides said I wasn't their responsibility. After a bit of poking, the A and E said there was nothing they could do for me because they were treating my continual collapsing the same way as the hospital, the fact that the drugs set off serious palpitations was ignored and then they graciously offered to dump me in a taxi to go home, a taxi I didn't have the money on hand to pay for at home and one they weren't going to cover either, gee thanks, I'm sure the taxi driver isn't going to take a promissory note, that's if I didn't get assaulted while unable to defend myself since I was still passing out(one local firm has had no less than three of it's drivers arrested for rape within the last few months, another has one driver who sexually harassed female passengers and workers and one who mistreated vulnerable disabled people, not all are that way but it doesn't stop it from being a dangerous situation for me and potentially uncomfortable for the driver if I'd have passed out before I reached home). Fortunately my shining knight of a flatmate showed up and rescued me.
Needless to say someone is getting an earful on Tuesday about this.

Good news: 24 hours free of this meany mcmeanpants mod and her ban stick.
Bad news: 24 hours stuck with patty and mirrin instead. Miscreants in addition to being banned, may also be duct taped to bonsai's and forced to create EQart. You have been warned.
Basically long story short, I'm booked to go into hospital on the 14th for the first of two operations on my jaw. It's nothing major but I may have to stay in for observation in case anything goes wrong. Basically I was born with a shortened jaw bone, nothing has been done about it prior but it's become an issue recently so they're going to remove some teeth and hopefully fix it.

Apparently a particularly piece of bloated software that laughingly calls itself an operating system updated last night on my computer, and it's newest update blocked my internet access so I've been going stir crazy for the last 24 hours.
Good news for you is that during the bout of stir craziness, I finally finished my new draft of the ToS.
Everyone's doing one and we plan to draw the best from each one.
Now I just have to show my version to the other staff, get feedback and suggestions on it.

Update on me:
The burn finally closed to a faint scar, I had to debride it regularly to get the two edges to close together. As a result my scar is only half as long and wide as the original burn was, it's also fading rapidly to the point where it looks as old as the burn on my other thumb from two years ago that I didn't debride. It'll be gone within six months. Which is great news for me.
In other news I've started studying Bargue drawings and Munsell colour and value exercises, I'll be trying my hand at both if I can find the time. I've really started to get into classical painting.
I've even applied to somewhere called rational painting to see how others are doing it. I keep getting rejected though, wish I knew why, I followed all their instructions including giving them my real name, yet I still can't get approved for posting there. If need be I can study on my own. I did so before I got the internet. Still I like working in a group, it seems easier to learn when everyone's in the same boat in terms of skill.
Edit: I know why I'm getting rejected now. Can you believe my dA ban is one of the reasons? Apparently nobody told the RP mod that a ! symbol on dA means nothing given that some accounts have it because they're -closed- or that sometimes people get banned through no fault of their own. Also another reason is because I disagreed with a mod at conceptart.org and got banned for it. Because pointing out that a date on when a law passed a committee is wrong is really a horrible thing to do and makes me "argumentative" apparently.
Plus apparently my gallery doesn't show enough of their "type" of artwork. Yet they accepted someone I know who not only has a -worse- gallery than me but who has been banned from quite a few places and who has a reputation for being a total drama whore and throwing tantrums. Yet I'm not acceptable. Colour me confused.
In still more news wilhelmina pepermunt is teh yums, my flatmate keeps swiping them so I'll have to order some more in within a month or so.

So an update on me:
Healthwise, I just got over being stuck in bed for four days, plus I burnt my drawing hand and have a massive area of dead and peeling skin on it that keeps cracking and bleeding when I use that hand. So yeah, healthwise I am not doing so well. I even spent my birthday sick. >:
Computer, just finally got it repaired again, power supply fan threw a tantrum this time.
Rant,
We give you personalized notes for a reason when we have to delete something, it tells you why we did it and how to dispute the decision. However, why does nobody read the "if you wish to dispute this decision, please contact the helpdesk" bit? If you think the decision is wrong or unfair take it up with the helpdesk. It's not rocket science.
Oh, and I know deletions often make people hopping mad, not an issue, I don't mind the occasional hissy fit in my private message box, but if you believe you've got genuine reason to be upset with my decision, contact the helpdesk. We have a review system for a reason, use it.
Anyway, this is SI over and out.

Mature content, porn and updates:
Written by subversive-imaginati

I thought I'd write a little on mature content and what it is.
The mature content tag is to cover anything that is higher than pg-13 really. This includes the following:
Nudity.
Hardcore violence.
Really anything that makes films and games higher than a pg13 rating.
It doesn't cover swearing, drinking or smoking. And while you can use it for those, it's not mandatory to do so. Note: After consulting with the other staff, I'm going to add that in case of Excessive swearing or works that garner a lot of complaints about the swearing being excessive, we may look the work over and apply a MC tag if the swearing is considered excessive to the point of being mature content. Please note, that in those cases, the submitter will be allowed to put forward a case against the MC tag to be considered. Note, in cases such as this it is typical that if the decision is queried that the final decision on appeal on whether or not the piece should be marked MC is reached collectively by several staff members not one.
Furthermore, submissions that are missing the correct tags? Will be tagged by staff. We generally don't ban people for not tagging unless it's chronic and persistent refusal to tag. But just a reminder, do use the tags if your work needs it, it makes our jobs easier.
As for pornography, right now the line is fairly blurry and some things come down to staff interpretation of ToS guidelines and individual interpretation ranges from conservative to fairly liberal in some cases.
So we are working on a new up to date definition of porn. I mean what turns the shielding hand into the manipulating hand? does an obvious intent to arouse someone make something porn? Where do fetishes like feet come in? Everyone says they know porn but we all draw the line in different places. The problem is finding a place that most people can accept.
As for Orphan works, the latest news is that it's passed another hurdle on it's way to becoming law. It still has several hurdles to pass and even then it could still be vetoed by Bush or possibly repealed by whoever replaces Bush should it pass.
In my opinion, it's not a panic situation yet, it's a worrying situation and yes, I do think it is a bad bill and should not be law because it opens a lot of loopholes for exploiters but if it becomes law then I don't think all of the situations that certain scare mongers have been predicting will come to pass.
I think everyone needs to keep themselves informed on it's current progress.
[link] is a good fairly neutral place to find out the arguments for and against orphan works, though they are not quite up to date on it's progress.
I'd recommend though that everyone start to work towards reducing the risk of their work becoming orphaned, this means applying watermarks, placing your name/web address on your work, adding file data to your works and registering it. Most copyright offices should let you register groups of work or collections for a fee so you don't have to register every single thing individually. The orphan works bill has not passed but to be honest, artists should be doing this already even if it doesn't pass having your work easily traceable to you is important in general.
I plan to beginning the remarking of my gallery shortly myself.
As for me personally, my computer just got fixed, I'm cleaning and redecorating my studio and somehow I'm managed to pull the muscles on one side of my face so it feels like I've been punched there. So excuse any crankiness, I'm in a lot of pain right now.

Policy on disagreement and negativity.
Written by subversive-imaginati
At Mar 10, 2008, 8:47:31 PM
The reports system is for serious issues. Lately there have been a spate of reports in which people have complained because someone responded to their response particularly when the person disagreed with them.
This is an open website, anyone with an account can view or comment on what you say publically and unlike certain other sites? We are not going to let you block people and we're not going to enforce bans on contact unless someone is actually harassing you in which case we will do something but disagreement is not harassment.
This is because this is a community site, it contains people from all walks of life, all types of personalities, and just like in real life sometimes you are going to be disagreed with and sometimes people are going to tell you that you are wrong.
If you want a happy fluffy safe space? Make a private forum and invite only like minded people. It is not our responsibility to punish others for your inability to cope with the real world. You want coddling? Ask your mother.
I'd also like to address something else.
Negativity, it's frequently used as a word for bad things but not all negativity is bad.
Recently I read a journal that a staff member wrote at another site where he seemed to be under the impression that all em-bittered ex-staff or users of that site were somehow disappointed because the site wasn't as elite as they wished or because they didn't get power.
There is no doubt in my mind that some people do get bitter and twisted just because they feel that they're denied what they want. But negativity? Can come from many different reasons.
Once a long time ago I said to myself that I did not want to end up like the ones who were called bitter, I thought they were just carping on because they weren't in charge. I was wrong and I know that now, not all negativity is born out of frustrated desire for power or change. Sometimes it's born out of heartbreak.
Yes, some people do get sour because they feel that they got a raw deal because they didn't get their way or didn't get the power they desperately craved. However some become sour because they believed in something bigger than themselves and had their trust in that summarily stomped all over by people who would not and could not understand how much harm they do to someone with their inability to realise how much heart some people put into things.
I think people have a right to be bitter and resentful without having people dismiss them because of this mistaken belief that bitterness is always unfounded or rooted in selfish reasoning.
Have a great day everyone and have a cookie if you managed to read all that rambling without wanting to smack me with a trout.

Sorry about that, journal submitted while I was typing the title.
Anyway,
I suggest you do not use artpad for creating artwork especially if you plan to submit it here.
Why?
They've got a rather problematic submission agreement.
Section Seven: Assignment
Basically the gist of section seven is? Everything you do on that website belongs to them. Basically by using their service you waive any and all rights to renderings created with art.com, including your right to be asserted as the author.
So you can't submit it to Storm because you don't "own" it even if you created it, or indeed any other site since artpad could then actually DMCA you for displaying something you created.
It's up to you, use the site if you wish, just don't expect to be able to keep any art you create on it.
Just a FYI

Reports desk vs the helpdesk:
Written by subversive-imaginati

So what do you use them for?
It's quite simple:
Reports desk is for simple small reports, a bit of spam on the front of your page, one insulting comment, a copyright violation that you don't really need a response on. The report link is found on comments and submissions.
Helpdesk is for general questions, ban enquiries, harassment sagas (ie if you can write half a page on it? use the helpdesk), mass violation reports if you've just got a long list of things to report and don't want to report them individually, and generally anything that needs a response. To submit a helpdesk ticket just click on the symbol to the left of the search box and you'll be taken to the right page for doing so.
We might alter the way things are handled eventually but for now? That is how they work.

Correct reporting procedure:
Written by subversive-imaginati
At Feb 9, 2008, 8:57:15 PM
We're having a bit of an issue with poor reporting so I'm going to take some time to talk about it.
All reports must be accompanied by evidence to back them up. Just as the courts do not accept unbacked prosecutions? We also refuse to accept unsubstantiated reports. If someone is breaking the rules please supply us with more than just one sentence claiming they are doing so. We want to ensure people aren't breaking our rules just as much as you do.
Please do not directly report matters to individual staff members unless it's absolutely necessary. Ideally all correspondence on issues should go through the helpdesk or the reports system. Please try to confine the serious must have an admin look this over reports? To the official channels.
When I speak about evidence, obviously there is a wide gap between someone calling you names and merely disagreeing with you in a polite manner. I should not have to inform people that the latter is a waste of time to report, yet we do get these sorts of reports. Disagreement does not equal harassment, please note this applies to everyone. For some reason some people are convinced that staff members may not hold opinions, while we do hold that said opinions must not interfere with a staff member's duties? Our staff are human and therefore are well within their rights to express a dissenting opinion in a reasonable manner just as every member is free to do so.
So if you see something that someone is doing wrong, please report it with evidence; And thank you to those who send in well written reports already.

Right I've finally got cracking on the new ToS (I know, I should have done it months ago).
As part of the new ToS, there's going to be new rules. So basically here is where you tell me what you think we need added in the way of rules.
I'm going to laying down stronger definitions of existing rules adding in a lot of new rules. While a few areas are going to remain a bit fuzzy, other areas are going to be tightened up.
In other news, please please please, if you are going to report something give staff some evidence to go on. There's nothing more irritating than getting a heap of reports with -no- evidence to back them up. we can't just believe joeblogg62 when he says that artthief45 is a thief. We need some evidence to judge the case or we can't do anything.

I'm opening up commissions for a while. Why? Because I'm saving up for either an intous or a cintiq. So hire my pencil and help out an artist. :)
Send me a private message to find out more.

2008 and a Rant

Another year ticks over, I saw it in with bubbly in one hand and a pencil in the other. Best way to celebrate imho.
Now for the rant.
What is up with stock photography sites?
90% of their stock is people from the waist up giving the camera vapid Kodiak smiles by themselves or with a partner and/or their kids. Does no other emotion exist?!
How about serious or sorrowful expressions? How about full bodied poses expressing emotions? I don't want to paint people who look like their greatest issue is whether apple pie or donuts are more American.
Seriously stock photography sites, get a clue. Stock is supposed to be useful for something beyond cutesy cheesy holiday brochures.
Gah!

I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive...

Long story short, my condition worsened, I've not been able to climb out of my bed for several days. Hence why nobody has seen me.
In other news though.
I'm going to be hosting a stall at Europe's biggest one day carnival, I'll provide details closer to the time so if you guys want to drop down, hang out, buy art/prints or otherwise meet up, I'll be there.
My kitchen is complete now. I'm busy getting ready for christmas, lets just say I'm planning a huge party.

Where have I been? I came down with a very nasty illness. I've still not entirely recovered, I literally cannot eat anything more solid then soup right now and I'm not amused at my crash diet. I wanted to lose weight but not quite this way. >.>

Went the cinema, brought a ticket for Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix.
Sat down, watch a bit, checked my ticket, yup it says Happy potter and the order of the pheonix and I'm in the right cinema with the totally cute Daniel Radcliffe on screen playing harry potter.
But um, yeah, there's where the resemblance to the book ended.
It might have said Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix but it had about as much resemblance to the book as moss has to grass, they're both plants and green but they ain't the same.
You expect some editing to be done but this time around? The editors apparently left the guts off the book on the cutting room floor. The result? Would be an entertaining movie in it's own right if it wasn't supposed to be based on something. They literally hacked the book apart, mixed up several major scenes, dropped huge plot points (including some important to the next movie) and added in some crap that definitely didn't take place.
If you haven't seen it? Enjoy it for it's own sake but don't expect anything even close to the book.
They got one thing right though? I wanted to kill Umbridge within seconds of her introduction. The actress playing her? First class acting.
The major annoyance though was the five special people in the cinema. Apparently the requirement to turn off phones applies to everyone but them. One of them spent the -entirety- of the second to last scene messing around with her PDA style phone with a light up screen, and she was in the row in front of me so it was a major distraction.
I really hate people like that, if you want to play with your stupid toy, stay at home and play with it all you like. Don't pay for a cinema ticket just to play with it and annoy other people. If you don't want to see the damn movie just leave the cinema and take the phone outside. Whatever happened to manners?

It's certainly been eventful around here, first the site breaks and the geeks run around madly fixing it.
We really need a  emote. This is one of the rare times I discuss my past but I think some of you will get some laughs out of it at least.
I'm having fun because somebody randomly decides to flip out in my livejournal, why? I commented on a community post and this person decided I was out to get her.
Apparently this person is convinced that I have a grudge against her and am stalking her. Now, here's the funny part, she thinks this because I banned her about 2-3 years back on dAt other site.
Yes, apparently I don't have anything better to do than to hold a grudge against someone I banned 2-3 years back, under a different name, though I'm amazed that with only a little digging I actually remembered her and the case, but then I always did have a good memory for facts and figures. Still it's 2-3 years later, her case was one of thousands I handled. Common sense should say that under a different name and this much later, the chances of me even remembering her are slim. Plus why the hell would I hold a grudge against her anyway even if I was the sort of person who held grudges? I just happened to be the one who banned her, I didn't have anything to do with the reason why she got banned. Seems like common sense to realise that there's no reason for me to hold any sort of grudge even if I was the grudge holding kind but then common sense is a misnomer, it's no longer common.
Speaking of strange blasts from the past, some other person decided to start "warning" the other staff here about me, over what you might ask?
2-3 years ago I handled a case over at dAt other site, someone had allegedly got a nasty racist note, it's something that happens occasionally. Staff can't see the notes so with no way of solidly verifying the accusation nothing can be done. It's a rule I didn't make, all I did was explain it to the person.
Next thing I know there's about 300 people screaming for my blood over it and accusing me of supporting racists over a rule that I didn't make. Some people should really grow up in my opinion and get over it, it was 2-3 years ago on a different site and I didn't make the rule and I am getting tired of telling that particular group of people that fact. It has nothing to do with me being racist or not, it was a rule, all I could do was explain it, if I had violated it and banned the person for sending the alleged racist note, what would have happened is they would have been unbanned and I would have been in trouble for banning them. If certain people are still stewing about this 2-3 years later, then they're pathetic.
Here's the kicker, I also had to put up with receiving nasty notes on dAt other site, I couldn't do crap all about it even being staff because I had to prove every ban to my then boss and "she/he sent me a nasty note" isn't proof. It's a rule that's supposed to apply to everyone there, even the staff.
Was it a full moon or something last night? It seems to have brought out the irrational people. I love how certain people can't wait to regurgitate every little imaginary crime that they think I perpetuated against them as a staffer on dAt other site. Let's get one thing straight, I handled hundreds of cases daily over there, all you people still sitting around nursing hate for me and crying over the "terrible mean mod" Subversive-imaginati after all this time? Were just another face in a crowd of millions to me.
I'm getting a bit sick of having my past hurled in my face by people who really really don't know anything at all. People who only know a bunch of lies, bias and a little selective truth if that, fair enough, I've never told the reality of what actually happened in many of the cases. But it is really too much to ask that people not be mindless sheep and believe every piece of misinformation that some dramawhore has blown grossly out of proportion?
For those of you who continue to perpetuate this particular crap, I reccommend something, it's called getting a life. I don't know how sad you have to be to still be chewing on something from that long ago that you weren't even right about the first time, and you know what? I don't care. Grow up because it's getting really really old.
And that's the end of my little talk about my past session. Got a problem with this? Close the browser. I haven't talked about anything that hasn't been publically noised around by the people involved.

Well this is wonderful. My computer has started to make funny noises. It's my fan playing up. At this rate they'll have replaced my entire computer. Which once again means I'm going to be away for a while until the computer is repaired, hopefully fingers crossed this is the last thing that goes wrong. That said, there isn't a whole lot of bits that they can change now. Only the fan/power supply/hard drive/sockets/case are original. Everything else has been changed.

I'm working on the next update, it should be up in a day or two. The FAQ is the big thing on the agenda this week as is finishing the initial draft of the new Terms of Service.
Okay, rant time. Well in this case some sarcasm because I'm just wee bit tired of something, this goes for a certain type of people, both here and in my previous position at a certain other site.
The you is a general one aimed at every person who thinks I'm out to get them and oh boy, there have been quite a few of you over the years. So this rant isn't aimed at any one person in particular, just paranoid people in general.
Firstly, let me make one thing clear, you are not important or even interesting enough for me to bother with stalking/persecuting/harassing you. I juggle all my housework, numerous doctors appointments, finding time to sketch, my duties on site and a lot of other things daily. On average my day is extremely busy, I get up and I have things to do, that is if I can find the energy to get out of bed since I suffer from a debilitating condition.
Please get over the martyr complex, it's annoying and quite frankly, nine times out of ten the sound of someone crying to everyone about how much of a stalking bitch I supposedly am is more likely to attract my attention.
Why? Because people will tell me about it and I'll take notice because the people who whine about how I'm "out to get them" are usually the ones who do break the rules on a regular basis. I'm just trying to do my job, it's not my fault if you can't handle being subject to the rules you agreed to. If you don't like the rules then either leave or submit a logical polite disagreement if you must protest a decision. Crying to me that the rules are unfair because I deleted your edited screenshot isn't going to result in them magically changing just for you.
What gets me the most? Is that none of you would ever have to worry all that much about me banning you or deleting your submissions if you'd just learn the rules and try to follow them.
I'm just the enforcer, the only one really responsible for your actions is you and so the consequences are your problem not mine. I am the one who applies the appropriate consequences, and I can reduce or lift bans. In that light, do you really think saying I'm out to get you and/or abusing me because you broke the rules is going to make me unban you?
Admittedly this doesn't happen as often as it did at a certain other site where I'd have at least one of the "you're picking on me" martyrs daily and frequently had entire groups of people who were quite certain that I sat at my computer all day waiting for just them to make a mistake. It has been cropping up from time to time here recently though, so I thought it was time to address it once and for all.
I'm just a little tired of being cast as the big bad meanie by people who can't or won't behave. My job is to make everyone's lives easier, I'm meant to mediate disputes, resolve issues and help people even if you're yelling at me, and I do that, however that doesn't mean that I don't think it sucks when I'm getting yelled at for something that isn't my fault.
End of rant and that's probably the last you'll hear of this. That's 3-4 years of frustrations out of my system and I already feel better.
In other news, I have been introduced to the strangeness that is woodruff jelly. It tastes weird. Hauntingly familiar but still weird, and it looks like something that came out of a nuclear power plant. It's a bright green jelly.

I won't be around much for the next two days.
My computer is getting it's yearly overhaul. My birthday is tomorrow and Monday I go for pampering or torture depending on your viewpoint at the local spa.
I should be back fully sometime around Tuesday, in the meantime if there's an issue please be patient since there may be slight delays in responses.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Edit: Turns out my couple of days will be a little longer. The memory in my PC? Well sufficed to say, it is buggered. So all I can access the internet on is an older computer which is way slow and is going to result in me hardly being online, it's going to be this way until Thursday when the engineer comes out to fix my computer. Thank god for extended warranties is all I can say.
So you all had better behave yourself for a few more days.
Edit Edit: Wasn't the memory. The motherboard is buggered instead which means I have to wait for another technician to visit tomorrow to fit a new one. It was throwing up random errors due to being buggered. So fingers crossed I'll be back fully tomorrow.
Edit Edit Edit: New motherboard, new error. Technician is due back on Tuesday. Still stuck with an old and very slow pc. Still not going to be here much until that changes.
Edit Edit Edit Edit: Idiot tech who fitted my motherboard didn't fix the heatsink on properly, CPU was overheating. Heatsink was refitted. CPU promptly revealed itself to also be frazzled. Senior Tech came today to replace CPU, first box he opened? Was the wrong CPU, it was mislabeled. He found the right CPU and replaced it. Then I told him about the other errors, turns out the new motherboard? is also faulty. It's being replaced Monday along with the graphics card that he found was overheating.
Fortunately there is not much more Murphy can do to the now re-named computer. They've replaced most of it so with the new motherboard it should be up and running soon unless the power supply burns out or it gets hit by lightning. We're calling the computer from now on Juggernaught, it's a reference to the Sparhawk novels since this has gone on and on and on.

They've replaced most of it so with the new motherboard it should be up and running soon unless the power supply burns out or it gets hit by lightning. We're calling the computer from now on Juggernaught, it's a reference to the Sparhawk novels since this has gone on and on and on.

It feels like you've waited a lifetime for something to happen and when it finally does happen? You almost can't believe it. I feel so happy, I've been vindicated finally and can close what was a very painful chapter of my online life. Admittedly it wasn't quite what I wanted but it was enough that I'm fairly happy with the final result. One thing it proved is that those who tell lies usually get caught in them sooner or later.
In other news, my illness has flared in my shoulder for no apparent reason, I can barely type and I can't use the shoulder at all. So no swimming for me even though I adore it and probably very little typing since it takes forever with one hand.
In the meantime, I've made it a priority to research what the literature community on storm-artists.net needs. Often the visual art community is very easy to cater to but I find literature needs a special touch in what tools they need. So suggestions and ideas are welcome in that regard.
Still I'm looking forward to the renovations, they're refitting my house, new radiators, new boiler, new kitchen and I'm redecorating.
So that's me, how are all of you?

The dark side of the arts.

There are two types of people in the art world, those who lead, and those who follow.
Those who lead are people like Geiger, Van gogh, Da Vinci and Goya. Everyone of us has it within our grasp to be a leader if we are willing to work for it.
Those who follow are those who follow hoping that following will be a way to seek fame and fortune.
The dark side of both is often pitiful to behold.
A leader whose own ambition turns against him trapping him in a mire of his own making because he's so busy being focused on what he wants that he never actually gets it.
The follower who thinks himself a leader by floundering along in the wake in individuals much greater than himself making a noise, hoping to drag them down by smearing himself on them and climbing on their shoulders.
Neither last long but both can wreak tremendous damage to themselves and to others.
The worst sorts are insipid to behold, cringing worthless creatures who speak as if they are the only truely talented people in existence. I suppose it is a mercy of fate that they cannot perceive their own inadequacy, bloated as they are with their grossly inflated sense of self importance and belief that it is them alone who matters.
No matter what happens to them, it is always someone elses fault. The "mediocre" who fail to understand how "great" their work is. These people who refuse the consequences of their own actions and will not for a moment accept that they are subject to the same rules as everyone else.
Such people invariably work their own downfall. Why the little rant? I have been slightly inconvenienced by such people lately, as such I felt it was time to get whatever minor irritation such mediocre and foolish individuals have aroused in me out so I can move onto far more important and interesting things than their pathetic little wailing. Fortunately such people are not users of Storm-artists since the community here rejects such ignorant and artistically stagnant persons.
I guess the lesson here is, if you work for it then you can have it, but if you as a person are not prepared to work for it? Then other people (who are willing to work for it) would rather people (who won't work for what they want) didn't get in the way.

Okay,
Now I thought I'd explain how the report system is supposed to work.
You send in a report, I pick it up usually within 24 hours and deal with it. If I don't pick it up within a day or so? One of the other staff usually nags me as soon as they notice it and trust me some of the staffers sure can nag.
You don't need to tell someone they're a thief, they know they are in most of the cases we deal with. All telling them that you know does? is warns them. We don't want them scuttling off to hide in another account, we want them there where we can educate them or remove them directly if need be.
The policy of the site for those who call out genuine art thieves? It's realised that such people are voicing valid if inappropriately addressed concerns, so if the comment is not completely inappropriate then chances are it will merely result in a request to not do that from staff. Persistance of calling out in the face of staff requests to desist from calling out thieves may result in a ban. Wild unproven accusations will certainly result in a ban. IE if you decide to pitch a fit because someone else has fuzzy lemur ears, a red headed naga or something similar, you will probably get banned.
I always felt other sites blanket policys nailed otherwise decent people unfairly, I mean it's one thing if someone posting something like "you theiving bitch, take down all the work you stole, I'm gonna get, you I'm gonna cut your head off, ect" which is completely unacceptable. Something like "please remove the works of mine that you have submitted without my permission" or "Storm-artists.net is for uploading your own art not other peoples" wouldn't really be considered inappropriate. That said, it also only needs to be said the once, page flooding is frowned upon.
The thought behind this policy? Is that the people who care most about genuine art theft are generally intelligent respectable people and as part of that respect I believe that a light hand in this case is needed. We will crack down on those who post false accusations and who actually harass, however the odd mistake? Will not blight your account.
The policies of the site are still being written down and refined. There's a fine line to walk because being tolerant and being too permissive.
Several of the policies are entirely different to other sites.
For instance?
We don't allow tracing of other people's work at -all-. I don't care if it's mega popular or some complete unknown. Tracing is not a learning tool and it is not a valid method of producing art.
Copying? This is still decided on a case by case basis. Our tolerance to this entirely depends on it being indicated that the work is a freehand reproduction of an original complete with a link to the piece in question. If someone tries to pass it off as all their own work? They'll be told to credit or lose it. I'd also advise any people who wish to submit reproductions? Get the permission of the copyright holder for it, if the copyright holder makes a complaint then policy is to remove it since they are legally in the right. Technically I should be much harder on this because of modern copyright laws but at the same time, freehand reproducing artwork is a long established and respected method of learning. I don't see any problem with reproductions so long as it is clear they are to be clearly marked as such.
One thing that has come up and is still being considered is adult fanart. While we do not allow submissions of anything that is pornographic, we do appear to have become home to a number of people who have issues with another site's stance on copyrighted characters depicted in an adult manner and so have come here for our allowance of it. Discussions, arguments for and against continuing the policy of permitting the submission of such work are welcome. Some of the companys might not be too happy for adult fanart to be posted here, so we have to balance our communities freedom of creativity against the possiblity of getting one of those companys mad at us for hosting such work.
Basically, at the moment I'm writing down the policy codex for staff to refer to, so if you think something should be changed, now is the time to mention it to me for discussion.

There's been no community update in a while because I've been just a tad distracted with other matters.
I'll be posting one within the next few days but in the meantime please be aware that the site is suffering some difficulties, we are aware of double posts, misloading pages and strange bugs cropping up. This is being caused by a limit our host has applied as far as we can tell. We are working on getting it resolved, however it will take a little time. Please be patient while the matter is attended to.
The staff are suffering just as much as you with the bugs so we fully sympathise and are doing our utmost to get this matter sorted.

And my weekend has been wicked.
[ladytwiglet] and her daughter Mia visited me and my carer. We hit the county fair and they both found out how much me and Peter like to spoil people.
I baked way too much food. So we're going to be eating leftovers for about three days.
Still I'd forgotten how much fun cooking was, these days I don't get much of a chance to cook largely because it takes a lot out of me.
I got my face painted for a lark and no doubt certain people are going to embarass me with pictures of it.
I'll have to see how many other people I can persuade to visit me just so I have victims
whoops, I mean volunteers to try my new recipes.

It's interesting how much stuff the community asks to be added. We have at any one time at least quite a few suggestions under discussion for possible implementation.
One thing that slows us down though is the time it takes to plan to build all this, why?
Because building a site is a lot like building a church, skyscraper or a castle. You know those huge buttresses you see at the base of really high older walls? And the metal they support huge skyscrapers with?
Those need to be built first. The solid foundations. Otherwise if we just kept building the structure straight up? Piling code on top of code without thinking about what it will do the code underneath? It would be down around our ears before we could blink.
Currently I.T are still ironing the bugs out in the helpdesk, and getting it to work in the most streamlined manner possible.
There will be more in the community developement report later, I just felt like posting a journal based on my musing about site building.

Do you know what my first comic books were?
The beano? Nope. The Dandy? Nope. Superman? Again, nope.
It was The Fabulous furry freak brothers a series of underground comics that featured Sex, drugs, violence, and political satire.
I was seven years old. My childhood years were spent with real characters. Not men of steel or cowboys who got their strength from cowpies. My heroes? They took drugs, did dumb shit, got into politics, got burned, got lucky and generally stumbled through life with a sort of who cares attitude that saw them through one disaster after another. I loved it, who cares if Superman saves metropolis for the 400th time? Phineas, Fat Freddie and Franklin were real people for me. They had real reactions to things. Freddie's cat could always be relied on to be what a cat should be.
So I grew up on steady diet of underground comics, I've seen a lot in the genre, but the would be underground comic artists of today? Are nothing like the classics.
Where's the rapier wit? The biting political commentary? The realism? Now it's all boobs and butts, sex on a page. If I want that? I'll go to the porn store.
What's this got to do with Storm? Just recently certain would be underground cartoonists have been making a huge song and dance and demanding we allowing pornography on the site so they can post their sexually explict imagery without it getting deleted, despite the fact that there are numerous art sites out there that do accept that sort of imagery, however many of the sites that do accept it? Don't have many of the tools S-A.N has or as many members. So apparently these people want S-A.N to change to please them.
Apparently they're pushing this agenda in the name of "freedom of speech" I'm sure if in the unlikely event that we allowed porn to be posted on S-A.N then everyone would enjoy being free to post porn for 0.3 seconds before we got every mothers against smut group and conservative group in several countries on our backs and suing us for allowing such material on a site which permits the under 18's to join.
Apparently I am "closeminded" because I refused to allow porn dressed up as art to be submitted, I'm not even going to repeat what one of them told one of the other staffers because it was seriously out of line. Apparently I'm "big brother" because I expect that all members understand that when they join the site they agree to abide by the Terms of Service. Apparently I don't understand underground comics because I'm "crushing artistic expression" by refusing to allow porn to be posted on S-A.N. Nevermind that I can say with a certain amount of confidence that only a couple of members actually want S-A.N to accept sexually explicit imagery.
Ultimately there are sites out there which accept this sort of stuff so I don't see why people have to come here, agree to the Terms of Service then get all upset when they're caught violating them and have the submissions removed. Storm-artists.net staff will never permit explicit sexual content to be posted on storm-artists.net. People who have an issue with this? Will have to find a site that does permit such content.
I just don't understand these people, it's like they come here to deliberately get their sexually explicit imagery deleted just so they can make drama about it and complain about how "the man" is oppressing them. Still I love my job even with these little annoyances. ;)
So there ends my little rant for today.

Harassment and policy.

Harassment, it's a very serious topic to me.
It can make or break a persons experiences with a website depending on the staff's reaction to harassment. Some sites? Don't do enough to protect their users.
I am currently writing up the harassment policy for storm-artists.net. Not one iota of harassment will be tolerated here. This is an art site, it is not simply some blogging site, if someone wants to behave like an immature fool there are other sites they can go behave like that on who will tolerate it, it will not be permitted here.
You, our customers deserve to know that we will serve your best interests. That we will do our best to make your time on storm-artists.net as comfortable and as happy as possible.
I do mean customers, whether you donate or not doesn't affect that. If you have an account you are a customer. It's as simple as that, our definition of customer is not dependant on monetary exchange. We provide the tools, you provide the content that makes this site thrive. The site and community? Have a symbiotic relationship not a parasitic one. That is important to us.
That said, I'm canvasing opinions on harassment now, what do you think is harassment? What do you think we should do about harassers?

I have three things to say:
Somebody DoS'd us yesterday.
I've seen some petty things in my time? But that is beyond petty. It is not just the site that was attacked but the community. Basically whoever did that? Has inconvenienced our customers for whatever issue they have with storm-artists, if indeed they are anything more than immature pseudo hackers out for the cheap thrills of playing at being above legal and moral considerations.
If someone has a legitimate issue with storm-artists.net they should bring it to the core admins and community for public discussion, not skulk around using underhanded tactics in an attempt to take us out. We openly encourage fair and constructive criticism of the site, that someone would take an underhanded method and attack us in such a sneaky and illegal manner? Insults the openess we take great care to foster as the basis for the service we offer freely to international artists both established and those who are still developing.
Also to those of you who have complained about the actions of an individual?
We are not responsible for the actions that are committed outside of Storm-artists.net. It is not the job of the staff to throw the book at someone because they did something on another site. Just as we would not expect the staff of that site to crack down on one of their members for something done here.
If someone strips naked and streaks through Asda then simply them being a customer of Tescos doesn't make Tescos responsible for them. As such I cannot and will not ban someone who has not violated the rules on Storm-artists.net and that is my final word on the matter. The issue is closed as far as Storm-artists is concerned and attempts to reopen it on storm-artists.net will be frowned upon.
The last thing I will say today?
I'm sick of people comparing us to dA, let Storm-artists.net be what it is and dA be what they are. We are two very different sites as anyone who actually bothers to speak to the core staff of each site would know. The mentalities and aims involved? Are as disaparate as you can get.
We are our own entity, with our own aims. Judge storm-artists on those aims and our results not against a site whose whole mentality is completely different from our own.
There are also to be no more threads in the forum devoted to the bashing of either site, intelligent discussion and debate of the relative virtues and difficulties associated with each site is permitted but if the threads get out of hand they will be locked. It is my fervent hope that dA will extend the same courtesy to us regarding those of their userbase who consider our site to be fair game for comments that are less than appreciated by our hardworking staff and community.
Thank you for reading all of that. If you have any reasonable disagreement with what I've set forth? Please feel free to make it known.

Changes to the category system:
Written by subversive-imaginati
At Feb 1, 2007, 7:49:51 PM
We now have a stock Gallery under photography with several sub-divisions.
I still have stock art galleries to add for things like colourable lineart that you want to let other people use.
Later I'll be adding a resources category for brushes and the like.
I intend to dedicate all of tomorrow to expanding and rearranging the gallery system so if there's a gallery we don't have and you think we should? Now is the time to mention it.
Edit: Damn typos in the title.
Added:
Stock art galleries, for now there's only linearts available, basically this is where you can put things you've made specifically for other people to colour/use/alter. It works the same way as stock photography does except it's obviously artwork rather than photography. I'll add some more sub-cats shortly.
Resources category added, for now it has brushes sub categorys for both photoshop and paint shop pro.
Edit: Crafts has been expanded, there are now quite a few new sub categories.
Edit: The long job of giving each category a description has been started, Avo has fixed the typo in the non-fiction section and made crafts a section seperate from traditional art.
Also a secondary emoticon gallery has been created, concerns were raised since submitting under the emoticon subgallery automatically ensured your emoticon could be selected for the storm-artists.net emoticon gallery. Now if for some reason you don't want your emoticon used but still want to show it off? You can submit it to the emoticon gallery under digital art.

Well I've caught up on all the comments I received and all my notes. I was being lazy about getting back to people but now all that's done.
My back is slowly healing and I'm starting to concentrate on what needs doing in my to do list.
I'm curious so I have a question for you all, what would you say is what you look for in an art site's administration team. I'm looking into writing a mission statement and to do that I need to know what the community expects out of us.

I'm back, did you miss me?
Well anyway, from the land of tea and cor blimey, I've dragged myself to just give a quick update.
I've been incapacitated for over a week, thanks to an incompetent doctor. (Seriously someone needs to make me a gimp waving a crutch/walking stick emote)
But I'm steadily getting better and I'm planning to be far more active over the coming weeks.
So what did I miss? Anything exciting going on with everyone?

And this is why...
I was in hospital for a day earlier this month, today? I cannot walk, nor can I concentrate enough to write a community update, heck it took a double dose of painkillers to type the Holiday message up.
If I haven't regained the ability to walk by tomorrow, I may end up spending boxing day in hospital and possibly more. Don't worry, I'll be fine but right now, I have a struggle on my hands, hopefully though they will finally after the scans I had be able to diagnose and fix the problem.
Edit: Situation boxing day is, I can walk short distances but my body really really hurts. I don't think I'll be participating in the boxing day fight for bargains somehow.

And I've got tonnes to do.
Argh, I've let my work pile up. Sorry people.
Firstly a great big thank you to everyone who entered the mascot contest. I'm a big disappointed that we didn't get more entries but the quality of the entries we did get is making it very hard to decide between them. The winner will hopefully be announced soon.
Secondly there's a very sweet new newspost on the front page, go read it. Normally "letter to editor" type news isn't really suitable for the front page however I felt this one needed to be seen, if you have an issue with that, kindly take it up with me.
Thirdly the copyright infringement removal initiative has caused some confusion apparently, I will be writing an series of articles covering copyright law both legal and civil for those wanting to learn more.
Fourthly, are you taking part in nanowrimo? If you are, do let me know, at the end of the month I want to showcase every Storm-artists.net writer who reaches the goal in a special news post. Nanowrimo is a great event to take part in if you've ever wanted to write a novel. I look forward to seeing who out of our writers enters.
Fifthly, Sorry this months community update is late. It should be posted within the next week. PS: We know about the glitch in the recent posts on the front page, hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

And with it the end of the month, I'm just reminding everyone that the SA.N mascot contest is still running, you have until the end of the month to get your entries in. If this contest proves to be a success then I may try to hold regular contests with a prize every quarter.
My computer is going back in for repairs, which is why you haven't seen much of me lately, I have read all your comments and much appreciate them, hopefully I'll be able to sit down and answer all of them sometime soon.
That said, there is something serious I want to address.
All the staff members work hard on this site, so it pains us all to see unfounded rumours repeated as truth. If you have any concerns or queries, please bring them to one of the core staff. We're not about to duck questions or refuse you answers to civil honest concerns.
This week we have had a big push on removing copyright violations. I have noticed following this a number of users have been spreading rumours because they're upset about removals prompted by their failure to follow the rules.
I personally think it is not acceptable to make wild unfounded accusations just because a copyright violation got removed from your gallery. We remove copyright violations because we are legally obliged to do so.
The following "reasons" are neither true nor have anything to do with copyright violation removal:
"SA.N are out to get lesser skilled artists"
"SA.N are going to make it so you have to pass a test to get in"
"SA.N is turning into an elite site"
They're all patently untrue and it pains me to see them repeated as gospel by people who should know better. There will never be minimum skill level required on SA.N, we only ask that your submissions meet our guidelines in terms of being entirely your own work, submitted to the right area, and that you're not uploading things that are porn or anything else we don't allow. We will not treat you any different irregardless of whether you're submitting Mona lisa quality work or stick figures. We are here to support learning and growing artists, not stomp on them because they don't meet a standard.
Thank you for reading this. Have a good week and good luck in the mascot contest everyone.

Well this week has been a busy one.
Personal:
I have an appointment with a back specialist on Thursday, wish me luck. Hopefully they'll finally be able to find why I'm in pain. I'm also experimenting with tamarind in my cookery and developed a liking for Onde Onde, a coconut and rice sweet my local asian food store sells. I've got a few new sketches to scan and submit, hopefully I can do that soon.
Official:
The new community update news post has been created, from now on, that should be going out every month, it's a bit slapdash this month but I hope to get the format solidly settled by the time I write the next one.
I'm really starting to settle into my job, discovering what I need to keep on top of and learning how the community thinks. I honestly am enjoying working as Community development immensely, for once I can freely exercise my love of helping people.
Of course you're bound to have heard about the three new staffers?
Patty is our new go-fer core staffer, I tell him to go-fer stuff and he goes fer it.
Seriously, I love working with this guy, I guess the thing I like most about him is that he is very ethical and stands up for what he believes in, something I regard as being very important, because if you stand for nothing then you'll fall for everything.
Karpie is our talented new coder, seriously when she starts talking code? I'm just bowled over. She needs some serious kudos after fixing the pesky bug that kept logging people out.
Armaina is our new help staffer, for those who don't yet know her, let me just say, you will never find a nicer or more helpful person on the face of the planet. I swear she could give sugar cavaties.
Of course unfortunately two staffer's left because they lacked time, that's always a shame.
In other news, you might want to head over and check out the mascot contest as posted on the community update for October.
That's my news for the week.

I've been fairly busy lately flitting around fixing a lot of stuff in my life and I'm getting ready to wrap up some unfinished business.
I've started painting again, not as much as I was before my slump but still more than I have in months, I'm working on developing some ideas. Other than that it's business as usual for me.

Well it went well, it was just a little get together for some friends but it was enjoyable even if I did have to run around like a headless chicken for most of the day.
My computer is still being tended to, it's got a memory fault and I have to wait for both the parts to arrive and the tech to visit to fit them.
Staffiness:
Right now I'm buried in the ToS re-write, if you have any concerns or thoughts on the ToS, I want to hear them. You can send me a PM or talk to me over msn. I am also available if you have any other concerns or questions, though you're better off routing tech type questions to avo because I can't tell php from css quite frankly.
Have a good day everyone.

I will be away most of it. My newer computer has to be repaired for one thing, and for another I have to decorate for and plan a dinner party. So if you send me any enquiries or queries be aware that I will probably not respond until monday.
The ToS is still in rough draft form for those who are interested, I'm also considering future projects. As a staff member I hope to be part of a dynamic team who work together to bring everyone an exciting evolving future for this site. Hopefully re-writing the ToS is just the start of the services I can perform for this community. :)

That everyone expects to hear what I think of the new dA?
Even if I hadn't been banned, I could not have used it.
Even ten minutes spent on that buggy late grand new version gave me A: A whooping headache and B: nearly had me vomiting as my epilepsy triggered (one of the symptoms of an oncoming fit for me is bad vertigo). In other words the new uber brightness makes me violently ill.
Perhaps I should be glad I was banned, I would have had to leave anyway. I can't remain on a site that makes me want to hurl my guts after a mere ten minute browse.
Edit:
Stolen from kia-tk:
"The first ten people to post after the edit get to request something. Anything. (Within reason, of course.) But, if you request something, you have to post this in your journal and thus continue the lovely cycle." ;) So request away, I can't promise I'll finish everything but I'll do my very best.
